The Anti-Racist Alliance is a movement that strives for racial equality. The group welcomes people from all backgrounds, and holds various workshops on how to deal with race issues in the workplace, classroom, and institutions. They focus on the symptoms on racism, how to understand it, where it originates, how it functions, and what can be done about it.
The Undoing Racism workshop is held by the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (PISAB), a national and international collective of organizers who aspires to create change through social transformation. It was founded in 1980 by Executive Director Ronald Chism and Dr. Jim Dunn.
Both organizations acknowledge principles for social transformation. This includes, participation in the Undoing Racism workshop, learning from history, sharing culture, developing anti-racist leadership, maintaining accountability, networking, analyzing power, transform gatekeeping, and undoing internalized racial oppression.
Racism has been systemically and consciously established in American society. Collectively the masses have to confront racism and understand it. An individual is not born with these kinds of characteristics. It is our job to comprehend the history behind racism, its origins, and why has it been sustainable. History paints a picture for people to easily recognize. The Civil Rights Movement helped blacks gain equal rights under the law of the United States. Although we are far removed from that period, it seems like history continues to repeat itself. The root of racism stems from differences in a country of immigrants. The rise in ethnic neighborhoods instead of integration plays a role in the disparity. Sharing culture in appreciation is an effective tool for a more tolerant future.
The election of President Donald Trump made it appropriate to be outright racist. After the events in Charlottesville, Trump defended the white nationalists and called them, “Very fine people.” The leaders in America have supported racism, sexism, misogyny, and fascism. It is important to develop strong Anti-Racist leadership in every community to combat bigotry on the forefront. However, in some communities like Chicago, the murder rate is quite disturbing which opens the door to racism. Blacks speak out because of incidents like the shooting of Michael Brown and the death of Eric Garner. In Chicago, 75% of those who are murdered are black, and 71% of the murderers are black. It is extremely important to maintain accountability for the actions of individuals. Black Lives Matter is an organization whose goals are to cease violence in black communities against the state. Their mission should include suppressing black on black crime. A strong network at the base of any organization is paramount for success. Gatekeepers preserve anti-racist values, and network with others who hold the same beliefs. These leaders can ultimately aid in the social transformation.
Internalized Racial oppression exhibits itself in two forms which are Internalized Racial Inferiority and Internalized Racial Superiority. Internalized Racial Inferiority can be best understood by understanding the oppression by society that has been maintained for generations. Blacks identify with negative behaviors and experiences that have been associated with them, which in turn makes them participate in self-sabotaging behaviors. For example, when African Americans are victimized by racism, they internalize it. They develop ideas, actions, and behaviors that support racism. Internalized Racial Superiority holds that individuals who belong to race’s that have been held to a higher standard obtain certain privileges, power, and advantages solely based on the color of their skin. For example, white privilege is displayed when a white male and a black male apply for the same occupational position. Even though they are both equally qualified for the position, the employer may hire the white male over the black male because of the color of his skin, as being white is associated with superiority and positive characteristics while being black is associated with inferiority and negative characteristics.
Together the Anti-Racist Alliance and The People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond are recognized as two of the top anti-racist training and organizing institutions in the nation.
