The Food and Drug Administration has recently acknowledged Cannabidiol (CBD), one of the compounds of Cannabis, can be beneficial when consumed. CBD is non-psychoactive, unlike the main chemical in the Cannabis plant, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which produces the “high.” According to the CBD Medical Journal, CBD has a positive effect as a neuro-protective, antioxidant, and an anti-inflammatory. It can also help with diseases like Epilepsy, Alzheimer’s Disease, Hepatitis, and Cancer.

The Endocannabinoid system controls our essential physiological functions in the body. It is responsible for homeostasis, and affects, sleep, appetite, pain, inflammation, memory, and mood. Scientists discovered cannabinoid receptors in humans and animals in 1992. The CB receptors are neurotransmitters, and are the chemicals responsible for communication within the brain. These receptors are also found in the skin, digestive tract, and reproductive organs. Cannabidoil interacts with the system resulting in therapeutic effects.

CBD can be smoked in a vaporizer.

Medical Marijuana is legal in 29 states, and the District of Columbia. However, the Federal Government still classifies Cannabis under a Schedule I Drug. Drugs under this classification have no medical use, and have a high potential for abuse. In New York, CBD can be found in head shops, and is legal to purchase. Although, more research needs to be done, there are promising treatment results for many conditions that are deemed untreatable. Medical marijuana patients have found relief using Cannabidoil. Research for three major conditions helped by CBD are, Epileptic Disorders, Schizophrenia and Psychotic Disorders, and anxiety. Medical Marijuana as an epilepsy treatment is extremely popular. According to the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, CBD is an effective anticonvulsant compared to other drugs used for epilepsy.

In 2015, an article published for Schizophrenia research found that CBD can be used as an anti-psychotic. Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder which causes the individual lose touch with reality. It affects the way he or she thinks and behaves. Results show CBD’s ability to relieve psychotic symptoms and lower the risk of psychosis. Small clinical studies have confirmed the potential but large trials are needed before CBD can be introduced into clinical practice.

The US National Library of Medicine – National Institutes of Health, investigated the effects of CBD and patients with Social Anxiety Disorder. Human and animal studies found that CBD has anxiolytic properties. Results have suggested CBD can reduce anxiety in patients suffering from this disorder.

CBD has immense therapeutic potential, but scientists need more research to back its findings. Senator Corey Booker has introduced an extensive marijuana reform legislation. The Marijuana Justice Act of 2017 would eliminate marijuana from the US Controlled Substances Act. This would allow the appropriate research needed to explore cannabis as a medicine.
